THE DOROTHY PROJECT

ART & SCIENCE AT THE EDGE OF
SPACE AND BEYOND

We are a team of artists, engineers, and filmmakers capturing Earth from above, and using science-based immersive storytelling to study how the overview effect can reshape human consciousness.

OUR VISION

DEMOCRATIZING THE OVERVIEW EFFECT

For decades, only a handful of astronauts have experienced the cognitive and emotional transformation of seeing Earth from space, what scientists call the Overview Effect. Dorothy is our answer to a fundamental question: can this experience be democratized through immersive technology, and can its psychological effects be measured, replicated, and amplified at scale?

Our research investigates measurable shifts in awe, nature-connectedness, and environmental intention triggered by mediated spatial experience.

The overview effect

MEET DOROTHY

OUR IMMERSIVE CAPTURE SYSTEM

Dorothy is a custom-built scientific imaging module designed to deploy multiple synchronized 360° cameras and sensors into the stratosphere via high-altitude balloon, reaching altitudes of up to 40 km (131,000 ft).

But what started as a stratospheric instrument is now becoming something more. In 2027 we'll start developing a CubeSat version of Dorothy to carry our custom high-definition 360° camera into low Earth orbit (550 km).
